Mendocino Natives Nursery Project

Mendocino Natives Nursery Project was made up of two ongoing programs.

Although they had clearly distinct missions, both programs shared the same ultimate objective -- to promote community building through local involvement in issues related to watershed ecology, environmental restoration and native plants. The Mendocino Natives Nursery Program was a community-driven, cooperative venture begun in 1998 to propagate and grow custom orders of site-specific native plants for watershed restoration projects throughout Mendocino County. Local high school students were employed as interns at the nursery facility located on the Anderson Valley High School campus.

Interns received job experience and training in native plant production under the supervision of Anderson Valley Nursery staff. The program was partly self-supported through plant sale income with additional support from the school district, grants, and the community. Most importantly, it served as a valuable local resource, and nurtures long-term relationships with area landowners and public agencies.

The Watershed Education / Anderson Creek Restoration Program was closely connected to Anderson Valley High School. It was designed to broaden learning opportunities about local watershed ecology and native plants at both the high school and in the community. Opportunities included classroom presentations, student science projects, and curriculum development. The program also had a strong component involving work on Anderson Creek demonstration site located at the edge of the campus.

Emphasis was on continuing student involvement in the development, monitoring and maintenance of the site. Kenneth R.
